If you were applying for a job, would you be opposed to or insulted by a skills test?

I work at a small agency and our last couple front end dev hires looked good on paper and interviewed well, but once they were at a desk working, it seemed like they had... embellished a bit. I'm wondering if I were to design a very small landing page and we gave them to prospective hires to code and get back to us in say, two days, if that would be a good way to give their coding ability an evaluation.

This would not be client work, just something made up so we can see their grasp of code structure and accessibility practices.

Good idea or bad idea?
